It’s Paul, The Atlanta Maker here with a quick Glowforge Laser Building Business idea for you.
It seems that paint it yourself kits are pretty hot right now, and even paint parties are happening in a socially distant manner.
So while many of us may buy a file with the intent to make a single version for ourselves or sell entirely finished products to many people, think about what files you may have at your disposal that you could repurpose as a paint-it-yourself kit or throwing a paint party.
With the Holidays here, wintery projects that families can use to help make their houses extra festive in this crazy year will probably be a good place to start, although don’t limit yourself to Christmas. I’m sure there are plenty of ideas that work as kits for New Years, Valentines Day, Fathers & Mother’s Day, Fourth of July, Veterans and Memorial Day, Holloween & Thanksgiving and of course Christmas. You could even create something for National Talk like a Pirate Day! Well, maybe.
With Christmas in mind, I bought the Christmas Tree Lampost kit from Big Blue Laser with the main intention being to make a single one for our house, but now I’m pumping them out as DIY kits.
It’s a reasonably quick cut at just over 17 minutes on my Glowforge Plus, and it can be done on a single 1/8” MDF sheet that is unmasked since it’s going to be painted. So there is no time wasted pulling off the masking.
These sell at $20-$25 for just the wood pieces or $30-$35 for an entire kit including paint and paint brushes, although the pricing will vary based on the number of wooden pieces and amount and colors of paint needed.
If you are doing a paint party, walk them through the entire process of painting and assembly, or if you are sending a kit, a quick video on how to paint and assemble might be worth creating.
So see what files you have laying around that you may be able to repurpose in a manner like this and get your business booming!
